Practice the Ten Commandments

Use the following list to study the Ten Commandments.  Keep practicing!  When you think you can say all ten without looking at the list, you and I will have a Zoom meeting together!  You do not have to say them in order, and you do not have to use the exact same words, as long as you understand what the commandment means.  Do not worry about our meeting.  I will help you if you need it.  Congratulations to Nathan and Quincy  … they had their Zoom meetings with me, and can say the Ten Commandments!  Look for their pictures with their Ten Commandments Certificate on our web page.

 

God’s Perfect Ten

1. Keep God first in your life.

2. Keep God’s name holy.

3. Keep the Lord’s day holy.

4. Love and obey your parents and  guardians.

5. Do not kill … be kind to people and animals.

6. Be respectful in the things you do with your body.

Reading

Read 20read for at least 20 minutes each day this week

You can read by yourself, read to a family member, read to a pet or to a stuffed animal … OR … you can listen to an audio book (see the K-2 Websites page) … OR … listen to someone read to you!

Don’t forget to talk with a grown-up about what you have read!

I-ready Reading … please try to complete at least 5 lessons this week

You can do more than five lessons, but give each lesson your best effort!

Read Anansi Goes Fishing, pp. 374-397.  Discuss questions 1-3 on p. 395 with a grown-up; answer the writing question in your journal.

Complete pages 123-130.  Check them with a grown-up and leave them in your book for now.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Writing

Reading Book

Grammar: p. 401

Review verbs for past, present, future.  In your journal, write the following verbs so that they tell about the past, present and future:   miss; push; dawdle; walk  Example: play: played, plays, will play

Write a paragraph about your family project robot.

Include an opening sentence that introduces the robot, at least three sentences that describe what the robot is designed to do, and a concluding sentence that tells the reader why the robot is amazing.

Write your teacher an email at least once this week!

You can write more than once!  I love hearing from you … and I promise to write back!

Write in your writing journal at least three times.

Put a date at the top of the page.  Use a new page for each new story or journal entry.

You may write about what you have been doing, write about a funny thing that happened to you, or write a story that you have created out of your own imagination.

Your story may be short or long.  It does not have to be about you.

Try to use powerful words that help your reader understand your story better.

You may want to add to your story when you write the next day.  You do not have to write a brand-new story every day.

Do not worry about spelling every word correctly while you are writing.  After you have finished writing your story, you can ask a grown-up to help you edit and revise.

When you are finished with a story, your grown-up can take a picture of it and send it to me through email.  Your grown-up could also take a video of you reading your story … I would love to hear it!

If you don’t know what to write about … try to use one of the following writing prompts:

  • If you could design your own bedroom, what would it look like?  What furniture would you have?  What color would you paint the walls?  Describe this amazing bedroom using as many details as possible.
  • If you were to describe your talents and hobbies, what would you list?  Make a list of at least ten things you are good at and what you like to do.  If you can think of more than ten, add those to the list as well.
  • Describe what life would be like if you were an animal.  What kind of animal are you?  What would you do?  How would you spend the day?   What time do you eat?  Do you sleep all night?  Write about what it would be like to be an animal for an entire day.

 

 

Math

Math Fact Practice

As discussed in our Zoom meeting last week, Miss Hanss has asked us to memorize addition and subtraction facts to twenty.

Create A Math Game

Design your own math game to help you practice adding three-digit numbers.  Make your game and play it with a family member.

Here’s an idea to get you started.  Draw a large board filled with boxes.  Write a three-digit number that is less than 500 in each box.  Throw two beanbags on the board.  Add your two numbers together.  The next player does the same thing.  Whoever has the greatest total number wins that round.  Play as many rounds as you would like.

There are five activities to do this week.  Try to do them in order.  You can do them all in one day, or you can do one or more each day.

Science

This is a fun family project that second grade does every year.  Even though we are not together in our SKS building, I would like this class to have this awesome learning experience!  Families will have up to four weeks to complete the project.  There are no additional science assignments this week.  There will be new science assignments beginning next week.

  1. Read Pearl and Wagner: Two Good Friends  (This was last week’s reading assignment.)
  2. Build a family robot.

This is a very open-ended project.  Your family may build this robot out of any materials that you choose. … the sky is the limit!  Given our current social distancing restrictions, any materials that you have around your home will be fine.  Your family robot does not have to be able to actually perform any task, but your student should have an idea of what your robot is designed to do.  Your robot may be any size, but should be three-dimensionalEach robot should have a name, and its name should be clearly displayed on the robot.

Each student is also asked to write a paragraph about her/his robot.  The paragraph should include an opening sentence that introduces the robot, at least three sentences that describe what the robot is designed to do, and a concluding sentence that tells the reader why the robot is amazing.  Please remember that your robot does not actually have to be able to perform a task … it just has to be designed with a purpose in mind.

Your student should write the paragraph so that s/he can read it to the class, but an adult may proofread for spelling, capitalization and punctuation.  The paragraph should be at least five sentences long, and follow the above guidelines.  Typing is not necessary, but an adult can type it for the student if desired.

This assignment is designed to encourage your child to be as creative as possible with planning, materials and developing the purpose of the robot.  (Pearl and Wagner’s robot was designed to eat trash!)

Each student will be asked to present her/his robot at a Zoom meeting.  At the meeting, your student will read his/her paragraph, explain what the robot is designed to do, tell the class about the design process, and answer questions from other students.  If you send a photo of your family robot, I will include it in our Second Grade Robot Gallery web page.

Please remember that your student has up to four weeks to complete this project.  Students may begin presenting robots whenever they feel ready.  There will be no additional science assignments this week or next week, but there will be some the following weeks.  During the week that your student is working on writing the paragraph about the robot, s/he is not required to do any additional writing assignments.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this project.  This project will not receive a letter or points grade, but will be evaluated on whether it meets grade level expectations … I.e. has the student demonstrated enthusiasm, followed the guidelines and put effort into the project.  This is an important project for second grade because it meets so many of the second grade learning standards including planning, problem-solving, presenting and writing.

As with all of our home-learning assignments, we understand that every family’s situation is different.  If your student does the best that your family situation will allow, that will be sufficient.  This project is much more about the experience than the final product.  Have fun together … and we look forward to meeting your robot!
